What is a sink?

A sink is a wash basin where in you can wash and cleanse your hands, dishes, and small sized articles. Every house has a sink or two. A sink has faucets for dispensing cold and hot water, a drain hole with a pipe attached underneath, a strainer to strain out left over from getting stuck in the drain pipe and lastly a soap dispenser. Many times, a water spray is also installed next to a sink.

In terms of usage, there are three kinds of sinks:

1. Sinks to wash hands: As the name suggests, these sinks are used to wash hands. They are mostly installed in bathrooms. Such sinks have only one compartment. Hand sinks usually come in elaborate designs. There are available in all sorts of materials—ceramic, wood, granite, stainless steel and glass being the prominent ones.

2. Prep sink is usually installed in kitchens. Such a sink has two compartments.

3. Dish washing sinks: These sinks are always installed in kitchens. Such sinks comprise of three compartments: one for cleaning the dishes, two for rinsing them out and three for sanitizing them before stacking in. Such sinks are always made out of stainless steel.
